I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2012, although I suspect I have been diabetic for a while beforehand. When first diagnosed I did nothing to control my condition, but after suffering from extreme bouts of thrush, I knew that I couldn't hide my head in the sand anymore. It got to the point where I would have treatment for thrush and then within a couple of weeks I would get it again. It is well known that sugary blood encourages all sorts of bacterial infections to take a hold. Not only nasty bacteria, having diabetes and not controling it meant I could end up having real life threatening and life altering complications in the future, from blindness to foot amputations!

I truely believe that getting diabetes has had the most positive effect on my life. I have lost 3 stone and I consider myself to eat much more healthly now I have a low carb lifestyle. Although I have a way to go, especially in losing weight, I really am getting there. Slowly but surely is the way to go. No longer do I get that horrible bloated feeling that I used to have eating processed carbs. I certainly am not perfect and sometimes stray off the path, especially when eating out and socialising, but I get back on the wagon as soon as I can. I never deny myself, I feel that if you do than then your surely doomed to fail.

Having diabetes has had such an effect on my life that I am actually starting University in September 2013 to study a Podiatry Degree. It has inspired me to work towards specialising as a diabetes specialist Podiatrist, having seen the horrors that diabetes complications can have on your feet.

If I can help anyone else who may be diabetic or who may just want to start a low carb life, then that would be fantastic. By sharing the great help I have recieved, then I hope I can do just that.
